A pledge class in a university Greek fraternity is a group of new members who enter the fraternity together during the same recruitment period. This group progresses through the new-member (pledging) process as a unit, learning about the fraternity’s history, traditions, values, and expectations. Sharing the experience of meetings, education sessions, service, and challenges helps the pledge class develop a strong sense of identity and camaraderie from the very beginning of their fraternity journey.
The purpose of the pledge process is not only to educate new members but also to build lasting bonds and a deep understanding of the fraternity’s core beliefs—such as brotherhood, leadership, scholarship, service, and personal accountability. By moving through the process together, pledge class members learn to rely on one another, support each other’s growth, and internalize what it truly means to be a brother of the fraternity. To make each group distinct and memorable, pledge classes are traditionally named after a letter of the Greek alphabet and paired with a unique nickname that reflects the class’s shared personality or experience—for example, the Alpha pledge class from 1990 is known as Alpha “Daddies.” These names often become a lasting point of pride and connection throughout members’ lives in the fraternity.
